Are you dreaming of saying “I Do” in a breathtaking location far from home? Here’s how to plan a destination wedding and make those dreams a reality!

1. Choose Your Dream Destination

The vibe you’re going for will help determine the destination. When you close your eyes, where do you envision yourself getting married? Do you see mountains? Palm trees? A city-scape? When having a destination wedding make sure you also consider exchange rates and potential hidden costs such as permits or gratuities.

Find yourself a travel advisor you trust to help plan your destination wedding. Many don’t even charge a fee for their services and they are a wealth of knowledge. They can help you determine if your budget is realistic for your destination and they can also advise you of local marriage requirements and permits. Each country has different legal requirements for marriage and it’s important you understand them for the process to go smoothly.

4. Hire a Local Wedding Planner

If you’ve chosen an all-inclusive resort for your destination wedding, a local wedding planner is normally part of the package. However if you’ve chosen to have your destination wedding elsewhere a local wedding planner will be able to help you navigate the ins and outs of the destination. They can also recommend trusted vendors and help handle the logistics of the days. If there is a language barrier, they will also be able to help with communication with vendors.

5. Visit the Destination

If possible, take a trip to scout venues and meet with potential vendors. This will give you a better feel for the location and help you with planning.

6. Choose Your Vendors

While most vendors will be local to your destination, there are some vendors you may want to bring with you for your wedding. Many choose to bring a trusted photographer and hair/makeup artist with them so they can ensure they get the look they want for their wedding photos. Knowing you’ll enjoy the final product well in advance can help alleviate stress surrounding a destination wedding.

7. Send Save-The-Dates Early

Be sure to give your guests plenty of time to plan and save for the trip. Include all travel information and accommodation options.
